What is an mp3?
MPEG layer 3 is a type of audio
codec whereby significant compression can be achieved while maintaining
most of the fidelity in the original audio source -- compression ratios
of 12:1 can be achieved with very little loss in sound quality.
Example:
Ben Folds Five -Battle of Who
Could Care Less - 3:16
WAV/CD TRACK =34,661,468 (33MB)
MP3/Mpeg layer3 = 3,114,724 (2.99MB)
As you can see..it's much more
practical to trade MP3 files than it would WAV files.
What requirements do I need to play these .mp3 files?
-
Mpeg3 player
-
Sound card (16bit for best performance)
-
Fast enough CPU (486 dx2 minimum...)
-
enough hard drive space to store your
mp3 files (anywhere from 1MB - 6MB per .mp3)
-
get a Pentium...no wait, get a Cyrix
they're cheaper ;)
